Old school fun with a modern twist: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Published by dan_doll at 1:24 pm under Wii Edit This

For gamers of the 80s and early 90s, there’s not much better than a good Super Mario platformer. Today’s gamers have gotten a taste of that action with New Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo DS, and now that old-school flavor is coming back home with a modern twist in a multiplayer Wii sequel this holiday season.

Beautiful gameplay footage from the E3 showfloor.

This video shows multiple characters (Mario, Luigi and two different colored Toads are playable) playing through a level where cooperation and competition are encouraged at all times. The scramble for coins and individual success while making sure all four players are surviving through the stage should make for a great new twist to go with this beautiful take on old-school gameplay.

The camera pans back when players are further apart from one another. Notice Luigi carrying blue Toad around.

The Nintendo DS version of NSMB sold like crazy and probably helped convince Nintendo that the beloved 2D platforming genre still had a lot to give. Perhaps that’s even where Wario’s Wii platformer came from.

Propellor Mario and Penguin Mario are two new power-ups added for this adventure.

If the level design stays as solid in this game as it would any previous single-player Mario platformer, adding beautiful graphics and four players at once will elevate this title to must-have status, particularly for those older gamers who have fond memories of Mario’s original adventures.
